About the Event

Jane Rhodes, Professor and Department Head of African- American Studies, University of Illinois, Chicago, is a biographer of Shadd Cary. Rhodes will speak on Cary, the first black woman in North America to edit and publish a newspaper, and an advocate for voting rights for women. Rhodes has called her both a friend and foe of Frederick Douglass.
